A Psalm of David
1. Ascribe to Yahweh, O sons of God,
Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
2. Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name.
Worship Yahweh in the beauty of holiness.
3. The voice of Yahweh is upon the waters.
The God of glory thunders.
Yahweh is upon many waters.
4. The voice of Yahweh is in power.
The voice of Yahweh is in splendor.
5. The voice of Yahweh is shattering cedars,
And Yahweh makes shattered cedars of Lebanon,
6. And He causes them to skip like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion like a son of a wild ox.
7. The voice of Yahweh is dividing flames of fire.
8. The voice of Yahweh causes the wilderness to writhe.
Yahweh causes the wilderness of Kadesh to writhe.
9. The voice of Yahweh makes does writhe,
And He strips forests bare,
and in His temple everyone says, "Glory!"
10. Yahweh over the flood is enthroned,
And Yahweh is enthroned king forever.
11. Yahweh will give strength to His people.
Yahweh will bless His people with peace.
Psalm 29 is a summons to the sons of God to ascribe glory to Yahweh for the power of His voice. Because of the reference to the temple in verse 9, I think “sons of God” includes both angels and men.
The power of His voice extends to areas all around the land of Israel: the waters (probably the Mediterranean Sea), Lebanon and Sirion (another name for Mt. Hermon, cf. Deut. 3:9) to the north of the land, and Kadesh to the south.
The voice of Yahweh creates tumult in all these places, thundering (in a real storm), shattering the mighty cedars of Lebanon, dividing flames of fire, shaking the wilderness, making the does writhe in childbirth, and stripping forests bare.
Yet in the middle of this great tumult is an island of peace. In His temple, the place of the beauty of holiness, His people, whom He blesses with peace, observe and cry “glory!” ascribing to Him the glory of His name. He gives them strength to stand through the tumult that is happening all around. “‘Yet once more’ indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken… that the things which cannot be shaken may remain” (Heb. 12:27).
The voice of Jesus calmed a tempest on the Sea of Galilee, withered a fig tree, healed the sick, raised the dead, and silenced His enemies. He is the Word made flesh, and His voice is the mighty voice of Yahweh. “God… has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.” He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High and has become much better than the angels (Heb. 1:1-4). “Let all the angels of God worship Him” (Heb 1:6).
Jesus is king forever, and He will bless His people with peace.
We, with the angels, will ascribe to Him glory and strength and worship Him in the beauty of holiness. He is Yahweh, the God whom we praise.
