Christ in the Psalms: Psalm 3

A Psalm of David when he fled from the face of Absalom his son
1.	Yahweh, how my adversaries increase!
Many are those who rise against me!
2.	Many are those who say about my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
3.	And you, Yahweh, are a shield around me,
My glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
4.	With my voice to Yahweh I cried,
And he answered me from the hill of his holiness. Selah
5.	I lie down and I sleep.
I awake because Yahweh sustained me.
6.	I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set an encirclement against me.
7.	Arise, Yahweh! Save me, my God!
For you strike everyone of my enemies on the jaw.
The teeth of the wicked ones you break.
8.	To Yahweh salvation belongs.
On your people is your blessing. Selah

Notes

I believe that we should accept the headings of the Psalms as we have them. In the New Testament the Lord Jesus and his apostles sometimes mention the authors of the psalm they are quoting. They never contradict what is found in these headings, though there a couple of instances where they attribute a psalm to David when there is no attribution in the heading.

Some form of the word “salvation” occurs three times in the Psalm (vv. 2,7,8), but many translations do not translate the word consistently. David’s enemies said, “There is no salvation for him in God.” David refused to believe it and prayed, “Save me, my God!” And he concludes this song with the confession, “To Yahweh salvation belongs.” He is the God who saves.

The main idea of the psalm is that David has put his trust in the Lord to whom salvation belongs.

Christology

We can see Christ in this psalm in two ways.

First, he is Yahweh, the God of our salvation. His name is Jesus (Yahweh saves), for he shall save his people from their sins.

Second, he became a man among men and was beset by many enemies all through his life and ministry. He put his trust in God and walked faithfully and obediently all the way to the cross, believing that his salvation was in Yahweh. His enemies denied it: “Let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him (Mt 27:43),” but he refused to believe them even when his God had forsaken him.
